九尾の狐は国を跨いで国家の中枢に潜り込み、滅亡させる恐ろしい妖怪です。本来は複数の尾を持つ獣は瑞獣ですがここでは恐怖の狐です。

Foxes, like tanuki, are known to deceive humans. However, Foxes are portrayed as being of a higher status than tanuki.

狐のうち人を化かす狐について書きました。人を化かすといえば狸もそうですが、どうやら狐の方が格が上のようです。他にも化かされた例や九尾の狐、葛の葉などにも触れてみました。

The bake-danuki (shape-shifting tanuki) has been regarded as an object of both fear and reverence. While real tanuki exist, they are treated as yokai (supernatural creatures) because of their ability to deceive and trick people.
