Bake-Danuki (shape-shifting raccoon dog)

The bake-danuki (shape-shifting tanuki) has been regarded as an object of both fear and reverence. While real tanuki exist, they are treated as yokai (supernatural creatures) because of their ability to deceive and trick people.

化け狸

狸は実在する動物であるとともに化け狸として畏れや信仰の対象として見られてきました。人を化かすということで妖怪として扱います。

Enko

The Enkou is a type of kappa that was commonly seen in western Japan. It is interesting that it is written in kanji as 猿猴, which is the same as the word for gibbons (long-armed monkeys).

エンコウ

エンコウとは河童の一種で西日本でよく見られたようです。漢字で書くと猿猴となり、手長猿と同じになるところも興味深いです。

About Kappa

Kappa cannot be simply categorized as one type, as there are numerous varieties. Here, I would like to touch upon their general overview.

河童について

河童はカッパと一括りにできないほどの種類があります。ここではその一般的な概要について触れてみたいと思います。

Gozu Tenno

Gozu Tenno is known as a god of epidemics but can calm epidemics.

牛頭天王

牛頭天王は疫病の神として知られています。ただ疫病を蔓延させるだけではなく、適切に祀ることで疫病を鎮めてもらえる鬼神でもあります。

Ibarakidohji

Ibarakidohji was an oni who lived on Mount Ohe in Kyoto and served Shutendoji. He is also known as a cunning oni who managed to escape after the defeat of Shutendohji.

茨木童子

茨木童子は京都の大江山に住み着いていた鬼であり、酒呑童子の右腕でした。また酒呑童子討伐を逃げ切った狡猾な鬼でもあります。
